The team of the Research Centre for Manors in the Baltic Sea Region cordially invites to the concluding conference after three years of project duration to present and discuss its research results.
For centuries, the Baltic Sea region has been the nucleus in Europe in which complex political, historical and cultural relations between the neighbouring states were formed. Like an archive, these exchange processes are documented in the cultural heritage of the Baltic Sea region. As nodal points in rural areas, the manor houses existing in all the countries of the Baltic Sea region form a collective memory of the region. For this reason, manor houses are an ideal object of research that also enables transdisciplinary questions to be answered.
These considerations led to the approval of the research project Research Centre for Manors in the Baltic Sea Region in 2021, which is funded in equal parts by the Ministry of Science, Culture, Federal and European Affairs of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.

The research project is dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of selected manor houses and their estates from the 18th century. The objects, which are spread across the entire Baltic Sea region, are being researched from a transnational perspective, primarily with regard to architectural, artistic and garden-historical issues. In addition, computer-aided research methods and the inclusion of digital humanities tools will open up new approaches to manor house research. The final conference will explicitly focus on this combination of humanities and digital knowledge acquisition and discuss the resulting opportunities and new research perspectives.

The following sections are planned:

  1. In focus: Architecture of manor houses and estates
  2. Interior worlds: Interiors and collections
  3. Outdoor worlds: Gardens, parks and estate landscapes
  4. Connecting! Thematic fields of manor house research
  5. Manor house research and AI

All sections will be introduced with a 10-minute report on the research findings of the Manor House Centre. This will be followed by specialist presentations by invited speakers, focussing on the 18th century.
